![]() When I started the Resources page on this site, I decided that I was not going to put out a long list of references for the sole purpose of having an impressive looking list. To me, it is more beneficial to recommend resources that I feel could be helpful for other bereaved grandparents based on my experience. It would be a misrepresentation for me to put out a litany of books/articles I have not read or to recommend a program, website or speaker of which I know nothing. Tonight, for the first time, I listed a book. For Bereaved Grandparents by Margaret H. Gerner is a little book. The dedication page even describes it as such. The entire publication is 48 pages long, with only 29 complete pages of text. It can easily be read in one sitting or broken down into short daily readings.
In the beginning pages, Gerner briefly tells her story - she is both a bereaved mother and a bereaved grandmother. And, even though there are glimpses of her grief journey throughout the book, Gerner's intention is that it be a resource for other bereaved grandparents. Sections of the book include: helping your grieving child, listening to your child, getting through the holidays and dealing with guilt. Most unusual are the special few pages specifically written for grandfathers. When we lost Kitty, I know that my husband could have used more words of comfort and support. Instead, his sister showed up the day before Kitty's funeral to fill out insurance paperwork for their parents. I was appalled. if you're in search of a comforting little book that you can pick up every now and again for reassurance, this could be a great resource. And if you've already read For Bereaved Grandparents, please chime in with any comments or thoughts. I look forward to hearing from you.
